What Dermatologists Want You To Know About Sun Safety

Protecting your skin from the sun isn’t just important in summer, it’s a year round commitment. The good news? A few simple habits can make a big difference.

We asked Dr Ryan de Cruz, Dr Alice Rudd, and Associate Professor Michelle Rodrigues from our Expert Medical Panel for their top sun safety tips to help maintain healthy skin, reduce your risk of skin cancer, and help prevent early signs of ageing.

1. Cover up with UPF 50+ sun hats, clothing and accessories

The simplest and most effective way to protect your skin from harmful UV rays is to wear sun hats, clothing and accessories made from UPF 50+ fabrics. While many fabrics offer some level of protection from the sun, UPF 50+ is the highest rating available in the world, blocking both UVA and UVB rays. To be certified as UPF 50+, Solbari fabrics undergo rigorous scientific testing to Australian and international standards, giving you reliable and trusted protection from sun damage.

Unlike sunscreen, UPF 50+ fabrics provide continuous protection without reapplication. Dr Ryan de Cruz adds “we don’t need to worry about the elements like wind, water or sweat wearing off our sunscreen, because we have UPF clothing on all the time”. Look for wide brim hats, as well as high necklines and long sleeves to minimise the amount of uncovered skin.

2. Check the UV index daily

This quick and easy step gives you a clear picture of your expected UV exposure for the day, regardless of the temperature. The UV index ranges from 1 to 11+, with 1 being the lowest and 11+ being extreme. When the UV index is over 3, prepare with extra sun protection, and seek shade during peak hours (10AM to 4PM) if coverage isn’t available. Dr Alice Rudd recommends “check the UV index every single day, all year round”. Remember, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate cloud cover so protection is key even if it’s overcast.

3. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to uncovered areas

Applying SPF 50+ sunscreen, even on cloudy or cooler days, helps to protect areas not covered by UPF 50+ clothing. Aim for a generous application, re-apply every two hours when outdoors, and ensure frequent reapplication when in the water or if you are sweating. Dr Michelle Rodriguez recommends sunscreen every day, non-negotiable! Not just the face but the neck and the back of the hands too”.

Adding these simple steps to your daily routine can help to protect your skin from sun damage all year round, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors with confidence.
