What is UVR clothing?

UVR clothing or ultraviolet radiation clothing is an alternative name for sun protective clothing.

Sun protective clothing is also commonly referred to as sun protection clothing, UPF clothing or even SPF clothing.

Sun protective clothing was pioneered in Australia due to the harsh, sunny conditions. Australia formalised the UPF rating system for fabrics in the 1990s.

UPF stands for ultraviolet protection factor and is a rating awarded by the Australian Government. UPF 50+ is the highest achievable sun protective rating.

Regular clothing may only achieve a UPF rating of 5 which means that 20% (1/5th) of the UV radiation can penetrate the fabric. Whereas, UPF 50+ means that only up to 2% (1/50th) of UV radiation can penetrate the fabric.

Dermatologists recommend sun protective clothing as the best way to prevent sunburn, skin ageing and skin cancer. Over 90% of skin cancers are caused by the cumulative exposure to the sun.
